STAINED GLASS (2020)

Artist Statement:

These abstract artworks were made using fine liner, Copic markers and watercolour on canvas. Inspired by stained glass windows seen in churches these artworks are an interpretation of stained glass windows, which were originally used in churches to enhance their beauty and to inform the viewer through narrative or symbolism. The subject matter was generally religious in churches, though "portraits" and heraldry were often included, and many narrative scenes gave valuable insights into the medieval world. One purpose of stained glass was to serve as a source of meditation, drawing the viewer into a contemplative state.

“I have always always loved looking at the beautiful stained glass windows in churches and old historical buildings, this love has since influenced my artwork.

My artwork embodies stained glass using sharp geometric shapes outlined in solid ‘harsh’ black, contrasting the more fluid and loose watercolour affects.”

Kirsty’s stained glass artwork incorporates hidden imagery, like a cubist artwork the shapes mask and conceal the imagery causing the viewer to get close and personal with the artwork to find the hidden imagery amongst the shapes.
