STAINED GLASS (2020)

Artist Statement:

These abstract works, created with fine liner, Copic markers, and watercolour on canvas, are inspired by the stained glass windows found in churches and historic buildings. Traditionally, stained glass was used to enhance beauty, communicate religious narratives or heraldry, and provide insight into the medieval world. Beyond its function, stained glass also invited meditation, drawing viewers into a state of contemplation.

“I have always loved looking at the beautiful stained glass windows in churches and old historical buildings. That fascination has deeply influenced my artwork.”

Kirsty’s interpretation of stained glass translates these qualities into contemporary abstraction. Using sharp geometric shapes outlined in bold black, she contrasts their rigidity with the softness and fluidity of watercolour washes. Like cubist works, her stained glass pieces conceal hidden imagery within their forms, encouraging viewers to look closely and discover layers of meaning concealed among the shapes.
