FRAGMENTED IMAGININGS (2019)

Artist Statement:

An artist's world is a place where imagination is rife as the artist attempts to grapple with the contradiction between fantasy and reality – a contest between what is real and what isn't. Glimpses of these imaginings are conjured up onto canvas, but often the artist's physical creation fails to encapsulate what was first experienced. What was once dreamed has now been dulled by reality.

The sharing of one's dreams can be a frightening concept, yet it can also be a liberating experience.

At first, the work was simply a self-portrait emphasizing the bleakness in the artist's mind. Using acrylic paint, soft chalk pastel on canvas the shapes resemble glass shards that pierce the skin. The vibrant colours ooze from the canvas like blood. The incorporation of a fuzzy triangular pattern represents the artist's disorientating anxiety. The vivid shapes seem to branch out towards the portrait as they attempt to overwhelm the figure; her dark imaginings overtaking her entirely.
